A Visit to The Disabled Children's Association
The fourth-year occupational therapy students visited the Disabled Children's Association at the King Fahd Center in Riyadh on 7/2/2019.
to observe and learn more about the various meaningful services that the center provides for Children with physical and mental disabilities or children with developmental delay. The visit was part of the Assistive Technology course’s activities. During the visit, the students explored many units with guidance from therapists in the Association. They were oriented about the Association and the kinds of services that are provided. Specifically, they were introduced to the assistive technology provided in the Association such as the powered wheelchair, crafted chair that can make the child join his family while sitting around a table or in the floor. The students showed a good interest in the crafted work and hence visited the workshop to observe the materials and how the modifications of the assistive devices are made in the Association. Other units observed include sensory integration and high technology. Later on the educational programs which are specified for the children with disabilities that can prepare them for future school involvement were reviewed. Different educational methods could be observed there and each method/ modification/ technology can serve the needs of each child depending on requirements.
In the end, the services which can be provided for the children with disabilities are varied and can improve the quality of life of each child. This is one of the major beneficial goals that the Occupational Therapy strives to achieve.
Conclusion:
The Disabled Children's Association is an amazing place that provides different services for children with disabilities, which can also benefit the Occupational Therapy students about how services can be provided for the children with needs.
