Principles of Cytogenetics Workshop
Dr. Areej Alhariri, Assistant Professor of Cytogenetics at the College of Applied Medical Sciences, KSAU-HS, conducted a workshop entitled "Principles of Cytogenetics, 3 CME" on 15th of January 2019.
The aim of this workshop was to introduce anyone in the medical field to the field of cytogenetics. The audience were introduced to the impact of cytogenetic pathology on disease burden as well as to the chromosomal structure and morphology. In addition, the different types of specimens for cytogenetic studies and the various techniques used in the processing of these samples were presented. Furthermore, the mechanisms leading to cytogenetic anomalies were also introduced. Last but not least, the audience were engaged in solving a number of case scenarios representing multiple types of cytogenetic abnormalities investigated through different cytogenetic methodologies including G-banding and microarrays.
