ICVT 311 - Anatomy for Invasive Cardiovascular Technology

This course provides a full description and demonstration of the heart as a three dimensional structure. Course starts with the description of the external and internal thoracic anatomy, with special emphasis on the surface anatomical landmarks of the heart and great vessels and the intra-thoracic anatomical relationships. Morphologic anatomical features of the cardiac chambers and heart valves are going to be discussed in details. Other aspects, like histological features of relevant cardiac and vascular structures and the embryologic development of the heart are going to be covered as well. This course consists of theoretical classroom-based lectures and laboratory practical sessions and is run in parallel with the cardiovascular physiology course, so that anatomical structures are link to their respective physiologic functions. -
ICVT 312 - Physiology for Invasive Cardiovascular Technology

This course covers the basic function of the heart as a pump. Cellular and functional myocardial properties are going to be described in details. Interactions of the electrical impulse with the myocardium in producing sequential cardiac events are going to be covered as well. Intra-cardiac pressure changes and blood flow dynamics in relation to the cardiac cycle are going to be described in details. Additional aspects will include myocardial metabolism, physiologic response to exercise, systemic vascular control and cardiopulmonary relationship. The course will relate physiologic cardiac events to their respective anatomic structures. -
ICVT 313 - Basic Electrophysiology

This course covers the basic principles of electrical cardiac activity and ECG recording. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of ECG recording and interpretation. Practical sessions of performing ECG, attending stress test sessions and analyzing Holter recordings are going to be provided. Systematic analysis of ECG, for ischemic changes, a chamber hypertrophy and rhythm abnormality is going to be demonstrated. -

Cardiac Pathophysiology provides information on common cardiac conditions and pathologies. This course is built upon and integrated with the Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology course. Each type of cardiac disease or pathology is discussed in relation to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, causes, significance, consequences, clinical presentation, risk factors, diagnostics, and treatment as appropriate. Specific cardiac diseases and pathologies within a broad category are also discussed. The clinical presentation of a cardiac disease or pathology is discussed in relation to the cardiology technologist's clinical practice. -
ICVT 315 - Pharmacology for Invasive Cardiovascular Technology

This course will cover general pharmacology with special emphasis on common drugs used, route of administration, types of formulations, dose and frequency of administration, side effects and toxicity, management of toxic effect, drug interaction, knowledge of chemical and trade names, importance of manufacture and expiry dates and instructions about handling each drug. Content provides basic concepts of pharmacology, venipuncture and administration of diagnostic contrast agents and intravenous medications. The appropriate delivery of patient care during these procedures is emphasized. -

The Orientation to Principles of Invasive Cardiology course is designed to introduce students to the invasive diagnostic principles that are an invasive cardiovascular profession, through the utilization of specialized equipment and under the direction of a qualified physician, performs procedures on patients, resulting in accurate diagnosis and/or optimal treatment of congenital or acquired heart disease while maintaining maximum patient safety and comfort. -
ICVT 317 - Coronary Anatomy and Imaging

This course provides a full description of the coronary arteries. Course will start with the description of the introduction of the coronary anatomy, with special emphasis on the surface anatomical landmarks of coronary arteries and its branches, then the heart segment supplied by each branch. The assessment of the coronary arteries by different modalities like echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and CT are going to be discussed in details. Other diseases affecting coronary arteries are going to be covered include congenital and ischemic heart disease, inflammation of the coronary arteries, then finally the intervention related to the coronary arteries in the cath lab -

This course covers the basic hemodynamic of the heart as a pump. Arterial and venous waveform are going to be described in details. ICVT 319 - Invasive Cardiac Instrumentation

This course will focus on medical devices and biomedical instrumentations, starting from an introduction of the origins of biological signals, the essential functional building blocks of a typical medical device are studied. These functional blocks include electrodes and transducers, biopotential amplifiers, signal conditioners and processors, electrical safety and isolation, output devices, and visual display systems. -

Those duties include preparation of the patient before the procedure, operating the x-ray machine, hemodynamic station, operating other diagnostic machine like (IVUS, Pressure Wire, OCT), programming temporary pace maker, using the external defibrillator in a proper way. -

This course will describe the effects of ionizing radiation on cells in the human body. Special emphasis is placed on the biological effects of radiation in the diagnostic radiology field on cellular, organ and organ systems levels. Stochastic and Non-stochastic effects are also discussed. Radiation protection basics and its related quantities will be reviewed. The student will learn the importance of applying the ALARA concept for patient and staff safety. Discussion of regulatory agencies and their involvement in radiation protection will also be included. The student will also learn the essential skills required for safe radiography and fluoroscopy practice as well as the safe handling of radioactive isotopes. -

This course will focus on special cardiac procedures done in catheterization lab and diseases related to those procedures. Diagnostic and interventional procedures will be covered extensively in this course. Tools that are used during different procedures like stents, balloons, closure devices and catheters will be covered in this course. Infection control addresses factors related to the spread of infections within the healthcare setting (whether patient-to-patient, from patients to staff and from staff to patients, or among-staff), including prevention (via hand hygiene/hand washing, cleaning/disinfection/sterilization, vaccination, surveillance), monitoring/investigation of demonstrated or suspected spread of infection within a particular health-care setting (surveillance and outbreak investigation), and management (interruption of outbreaks). This course covers the clinical, anatomical and pathophysiologic aspects of congenital heart diseases. Students are going to be introduced to new scientific terminologies and pathological conditions that are commonly seen at pediatric age group. Almost all cardiac defects or congenital anomalies that are commonly seen in clinical practice are going to be covered in theoretical sessions. The practical applications of this course are going to be covered in “Pediatric Invasive Cardiology” course that is run in parallel with this course. -

This course consists of theoretical lectures and practical laboratory sessions. This course will be mainly presented by the student themselves. The student will be divided into groups and each group will be given different topics related to invasive science in cardiovascular technology. These topics will include the recent advances in invasive cardiovascular technology and also related to general cardiology. The student will be given to the articles ahead of time before presentation and they will be provided with the required references. The first week will be an introduction about cardiac catheterization seminar and the objective of it and this will be given by the block coordinator and the program director. -
ICVT 418 - Advanced Cardiac Electrophysiology

This course covers the advanced skills of Electrophysiology (EP) laboratory. Students will be introduced to the advanced concepts of Electrocardiography (ECG) and Intra-cardiac Electrograms (IEGM) recording and interpretation. Student also will be introduced to devices implantation procedures and their role during the procedure. Practical sessions will cover those procedure and other diagnostic and interventional procedures in the Electrophysiology lab. Students will be introduced to the testing parameters of the devices in the device clinic. Also related clinical trials are going to be discussed in this course. -
ICVT 419 - Quality and Professional Development

Introduces the student to the concepts and applications of quality and safety in health care, covering the historical development of quality improvement and the introduction of quality improvement programs as a multidisciplinary approach in the health field. Available data sources and appropriate data collection methods for the measurement of quality and safety in various health settings are described, as well as methods of data presentation. The course also discusses the implementation of quality and safety programs at an organizational level. -
